Getting involved in the National Reserve System
The National Reserve System is a great conservation partnership.
From governments to community groups, from multinational organisations to individual farmers, the cooperative spirit of the National Reserve System is crossing borders and building new conservation coalitions, as people from all walks of life work to safeguard Australia's environment.
Everyone has a part to play, from purchasing property or adding existing land to the network, to placing a conservation covenant on part of a working farm. Every year the role of the private sector grows, as corporates and philanthropic trusts understand the value of conserving our environment. Not to be forgotten are the thousands of volunteers who help manage the reserves, monitoring water quality or battling weeds and pests, and the hundreds of thousands of ordinary Australians whose donations help community groups and NGOs buy and manage new properties.
This national effort recognises that rare and endangered species exist on a wide range of landholdings. The reserve system cannot be built solely on government-owned lands such as national parks, nor can it be managed without wide community support.
