Adelaide Solar City
Adelaide - Australia's first solar city
The Adelaide Solar City consortium is working with industry, businesses and the local community to rethink the way they produce and use energy.
The areas of the City of Salisbury, City of Tea Tree Gully and City of Playford and Adelaide City Council are the key focus of this innovative 'real world' trial.
Practical benefits for the local community
Adelaide was chosen as a Solar City because it has peak electricity supply problems and higher average domestic electricity prices than other States. It also has a large amount of sunshine each year which makes it ideal for generating electricity from the sun.
Energy options being trialed through the Adelaide Solar City include:
- 1700 solar photovoltaic panels will be installed on homes and commercial buildings - 2 megawatts of renewable power that will double South Australia's current photovoltaic capacity.
- Consumers will receive help to finance their solar systems.
- Installation of solar panels on up to 5 iconic buildings such as the Adelaide Central Markets, the new Adelaide Bus Depot, Salisbury Watershed, Playford Aquadome and SA Water Building.
- 7000 smart meters will be installed in homes and business that, together with fairer pricing structures, will help people monitor their energy use and save electricity, and help electricity providers better understand consumer choices.
- 40,000 energy efficiency and information packages will be provided to households and commercial customers, to support their energy efficient choices.
- The opportunity to participate in an extensive consumer campaign to adopt Green Power.
- Some community housing tenants to trial solar power and solar hot water.
Additional benefits
Additional benefits of the Adelaide Solar City include:
- an expected 9 megawatt cut in peak electricity demand, with the potential to defer investment in peak infrastructure.
- savings of 28 gigawatt hours of energy, representing $5 million a year in lower electricity costs.
- a reduction of 30,000 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions each year, with a further cut of more than 500,000 if the consortium's broader objective to encourage the take up of Green Power is achieved. This equates to taking 80 per cent of the area's vehicles off the road.
- valuable information and lessons to inform future energy and greenhouse policies.
Consortium members
The Adelaide Solar City consortium is joining with the Australian Government in delivering this innovative new trial. The consortium is led by Origin Energy, with consortium members including BP Solar, Big Switch Projects, the City of Salisbury, Delfin Lend Lease and the ANZ Banking Group.
