Australian Antarctic Territory
The Australian Antarctic Territory is one of the themes for national state of the environment reporting.
The Australian Antarctic Territory, including the sub-Antarctic territories of Heard Island, McDonald Island and Macquarie Island (Tasmania), was included as a separate theme for the first time in SoE 2006. In SoE 1996 and SoE 2001 the information about the condition of these external territories was integrated into the other themes.
The Australian Antarctic Territory theme covers the following environmental issues:
- climate, atmosphere and the ice
- marine ecosystems
- human pressures
- Antarctic heritage, including:
- condition of Antarctic heritage sites
- risks to Antarctic heritage sites
- resources to manage Antarctic heritage sites
- Antarctic heritage collections in Australia
